Best Learning Experience
One of my best learning experiences was during a project that I did in my grade 12 geology class. The class was put into partners and we were assigned a different location in our community to assess what would happen during an earthquake there. We needed to research safety precautions that the city and community members could take, as well as the potential damage that could be caused during the earthquake. This was one of my best learning experiences because I got to work with a peer and it was on a topic that I really enjoyed. I also was able to present my learning in a different way instead of in a test format. Often for a test, I would find myself trying to memorize as much information as possible and then disposing of it afterward, in preparation for the next test. But what really made this experience stand out was being able to go visit the location of the area of the community I was researching. I enjoyed getting out of the classroom, taking my knowledge and physically applying it to the area around me. I was able to view in real life all of the surroundings at that location, where pictures could have missed something important. The location that my group was assigned was also within walking distance of my high school so I was able to walk (outside of class time) to my site and have an active brain break during lunch between classes. Many students in school look for in school reasoning behind what they are learning and how it will be relevant throughout their lives. This is why I was very fond of the earthquake project because I was able to understand how I could take what I was learning and apply it throughout my life or even follow it into a career if I really wanted to.
